How we use cookies on this site

Like many others, the New Humanist website makes use of cookies. This page explains what cookies are, how they are used at newhumanist.org.uk and how you can control them.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files sent by a website to your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Google Chrome) which allow it to be distinguished from those of other visitors.

How are cookies used on newhumanist.org.uk?

We use cookies for the following purposes:

  • To facilitate the checkout process when subscribing to one of our products. These cookies (named JSESSIONID and SESSIONCOOKIESSET) allow us to identify your web browser from page to page so that we can maintain your session during checkout. They do not collect any data and are deleted by your browser when you close it.
  • To detect the size and quality (the "resolution") of your computer, phone or other device's screen. This is so that we don't waste your time and bandwidth sending you images which are too large for your screen. This cookie (called RESOLUTION) is also deleted when you close your web browser.
  • To gather anonymous visitor statistics: we use the popular Google Analytics service to provide data on the numbers of visits to our site. These cookies all begin with __utm.
