Job Title: Deputy Editor, New Humanist magazine

Location: Green House, London, E2 9DA and remote working

Rate: £190 per day

Hours: 2-3 days per week

About the role:

As Deputy Editor, you will be part of the small editorial team behind New Humanist magazine and the podcast With Reason. Your main responsibilities will be assisting the Editor on the quarterly print magazine, as well taking the lead on the New Humanist website and social media channels. There is also a possibility of co-hosting the New Humanist podcast, With Reason.

You will be self-employed, on a rate of £190 per day, for 2-3 days a week. More days are usually needed as the magazine approaches its print deadline. Ideally, the Deputy Editor would come into our offices in Cambridge Heath for 2 days a week. However, the job is flexible and working from home part of the time is negotiable.

About New Humanist magazine:

New Humanist magazine is published by the Rationalist Association. A quarterly magazine of ideas, politics, science and culture, New Humanist brings together expert voices and quality journalism. We have a strong subscription base, and are also sold at newsagents, including WH Smiths, across the country and abroad.

About the Rationalist Association:

The Rationalist Association is a national charity which promotes inquiry and debate based on evidence rather than belief. Founded in 1885, we champion ideas that advance science and reason, challenge religious intolerance, and support moral humanist thinking.

Key tasks and activities:

  • Deputy editing New Humanist magazine. This will include supporting the Editor to plan each issue, commission new features and find new writers, as well as editing long features and writing occasional short pieces for the magazine.

  • Overseeing the New Humanist website, including commissioning, editing and publishing content using our CMS.

  • Overseeing our social media channels and newsletter.

  • Possibility of co-hosting the With Reason podcast (currently on hiatus).

Essential criteria:

  • Editorial experience on a general interest publication, including a track-record of commissioning.

  • Ability to think strategically and generate new ideas

  • Ability to work on a small team, multi-tasking and problem-solving

  • Good knowledge of social media

  • Basic understanding of marketing within the media industry

Desirable criteria:

  • Enthusiasm and support for rationalism and humanism

  • Experience of commissioning on culture, science and big ideas

  • Experience of editing long features, including working on structural edits

  • Knowledge of the publishing industry, particularly small magazines

  • Advanced journalistic skills
